Cultural History of Photography

RESEARCH

Task 1:

Task 2:

Analyse photographic theory and concepts

Before working on the live-case scenario of St Mark’s Church, the author along with her teammate had to choose a photographic theory, which in our case was typology. This research will helps us come up with our own individual concepts.

What is Typology?

Typology is the photographic study of types which are photographed with the same forms, consistency and repetitive style.

Here are some examples of typology:

Bernd and Hilla Becher:

Rachel Been:

St Mark's Church

On the 10th of April, the author and her teammate went for a second visit to the church.  A tour was provided by Father David Cortis and he allowed us to take images.

Creating digital typology cyanotypes step-by-step process

After taking all the necessary photos during the photo shoot, the author edited the chosen images. To get an idea on how the final image would look like, the author found a tutorial on how to create a digital cyanotype on Photoshop (White, 2013).

 Digital typology cyanotypes

Creating cyanotypes on Photoshop

After showing my lecturer my concept & test shots, the lecturer suggested that I convert my images to black and white and print them on plastic sheets.  These special sheets will be used to place over the paper to create the cyanotype print.

This is an example of how this plastic sheet will look like after the printing process is complete:

Unfortunately, Whilst trying to print my inverted black and white images with the help of my lecturer, the heat of the printer was melting the plastic causing a health hazard.  The lecturer in fact burnt his hand in the process because of this minor accident.  After further discussion, the lecturer and I reached to a final decision. The final idea is to use the Photoshop cyanotypes experimental pictures and print them on an A3 sized foam board.

The very same day, I emailed Father Cortis and attached my work. Here is his reply:
